Marillyn was born August 16, 1936, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of J. Harold and Violet Tooman Furnas. She was a 1954 graduate of Muscatine High School.
She married Robert (Bob) Schlutz on September 12, 1954, in Muscatine.
Survivors include one son Kevin Schlutz (Linda) of Columbus Junction, one daughter Lynn Hagen (Howard) of West Des Moines, 5 Grandchildren, Eric Schlutz (Teri) of Letts, Michelle Hunt (Matt) of Columbus Junction, Matthew Hagen (Bridget) of Westwood MA., Philip Hagen of West Des Moines, and Thomas Hagen of High Amana and six great grandchildren, Dale (Allie), Grace Kemp (Blake) and Jacob Schlutz, Davis (Natasha) and Gavin Hunt, and Don Hagen. She is also survived by one great-great grandchild, Tatum Blake, and a niece, Sandie Samuelson of Brighton Colorado.
She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, her parents and both siblings, Robert Furnas and Grace Ann Yates.
She and Bob were involved in many different business ventures and associated activities, but Marillyn was also very involved as a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church, playing the organ for over 40 years, with the Grandview Women’s Club, serving as Club President and County Chairman. Also, the Indian Creek Club and the Friendly Neighbors Club.
She served many years as the Louisa County representative on the Eastern Iowa Tourism Board. She was the Superintendent of Fine Arts at the Louisa County Fair and loved to do entries in all the divisions. She was President of the Iowa Angus Auxiliary and served as Ways and Means director of the American Angus Auxiliary. In 1998 she was the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame County inductee.
She was also a long-time member and supporter of the Louisa County Historical Society and Grandview Letts Lions Club. She donated blood and enjoyed visiting the nursing homes. She loved to cook, decorate cakes, garden, send special gifts and cards, and prepare and deliver meals for the farmhands.
Marillyn was equally involved in Sarasota Florida, where they spent the winters. She was always home in time to host the family for Easter dinner and those family gatherings were extremely important to her.
Marillyn and Bob were also quick to help with the needs they saw. They donated to many community activities including the Civic Center/Library, Colonel’s Kids Childcare Center, The Louisa County Fair Youth Center and the Grandview Academy Park shelter house, as well as the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation, University of Iowa and the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement. Their Schlutz Family Charitable Foundation will continue to support their interests well into the future.
She would also want to thank and remember Kip Trader and Tim, Carol and Nathan Whittaker for all their many years working together.
Many thanks to her caregivers from Home Instead and Iowa City Hospice for their caring and dedication to her, especially Sandy and Laurie.
