John J. LaKose, age 94, of Brooklyn, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2025, at Unity Point Health in Grinnell. Funeral service: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 11, 2025, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Pastor Jane Cibula officiating. A private burial will be in the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation: 4-7 p.m., Monday, February 10, 2025, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Memorials may be contributed to the charity of the donor’s choice.

John is survived by his children, Loretta (Dennis) Thompson of Grinnell, Rita (Gary) Grier of Newton, Duane LaKose (Wei Gao) of Queen Creek, AZ., and Wayne LaKose (Doris Nusbaum) of Grinnell; 11 grandchildren, Jarrett Thompson, Justin (Peyton) Thompson, Jessica (Adam) Johnson, Carrie (Dan) Cibula, Kristina (Nick) Cimaglia, Josh (Cassie) LaKose, Jeremy (Rachel) LaKose, Brett (Tammie) LaKose, Brittany LaKose, Keshia LaKose, (Richard Cooper); 23 great-grandchildren, Keaton and Kamden Johnson, Addyson, Libby, and Maddox Cibula, Olive Judge and Luca Cimaglia, Caden, Joey, Beeya, and Jacob LaKose, Gwen and Toby LaKose, Riley, Ethan and Koen LaKose, Max, Ulysess, and Jaziel LaKose, Jasmine, Shaylnn, and Devin Cooper, and Callen Thompson. Also surviving John is a brother, Mike (Patricia) LaKose.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Grace in 2022, grandson Kyle LaKose, brother Robert “Bob” LaKose, and sister Rosemary Kibbee.

John Joseph LaKose was born May 29, 1930, in Victor, Iowa, the son of Raymond and Rose (VanErsvelde) LaKose. John attended rural Scott #6 school through the 8th grade. In his younger years, John enjoyed fishing. He was united in marriage to Grace Douglas on June 6, 1953, at St. Patrick’s Rectory in Brooklyn. John farmed north of Malcom for 33 years, over those years he raised cattle, hogs, chicken and his crops. He also worked for Nesselroad Chevrolet in Brooklyn for 20 years. He and Grace loved to play cards. John often took his scooter for rides in Brooklyn. He enjoyed playing pool, and was always described as brave, kind and very well liked. John had a great smile and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
