Charles John Hoaglund was born Oct. 4, 1859 at Varmland, Sweden, and died Oct. 25, 1945, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ethel Tuneberg in Ida Grove, His illness was of short duration and his passing was peaceful, being at the time of his death 86 years and 21 days of age. He was the third of eight children born to John and Anika Larson Hoaglund. At the age of 6, he came with his parents to America, arriving in Fayette Co., Iowa, on Aug 10, 1865. Here they underwent the hardships of pioneer life as well as later in Crawford Co., where they arrived on June 14, 1869. They engaged in farming until 1886 when they moved to Arthur. Here they built and conducted the first general merchandise store in this new town. In 1902 they went to Kiron and engaged in the merchantile business until 1908 when he returned to Ida County where he farmed for many years. During his later years he made his home with his children. On July 31, 1881, he was married to Hannah Carlson, but this union was brief, ending with her death in November 1885. Two children were born, one of whom, Elmer, died in Feb. 1920. On December 4, 1889, he was married to Ida Cain of Arthur, who preceded him in death Sept. 30, 1925. Nine children were born to this marriage, two of whom preceded him in death; Irene, May 16, 1930, and Clarence, Sept. 9, 1932. Those left to mourn the passing of a kind and loving father are Edna Clark of Des Moines, Charles, Centralia, Wash., Scott, Wall Lake, Bruce in the armed forces. Russell, Carroll and Virginia Estep, Arthur and Ethel Tuneberg of Ida Grove. He is also survived by 30 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Arthur M. E. Church at 2 p.m Tuesday, Oct. 30, Rev. W. S. Handy officiating. A ladies quartette, Mrs. Sam Love, Mrs. Will Seney, Mrs. W. S. Handy and Mrs. Norman Forsburg, accompanied by Mrs. Chas. Anderson, sang, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “In the Sweet Bye and Bye.” Burial was in Ida Grove Cemetery. Pall bearers were Julius Brucker, Adam Hemer, R. C. Stewardson, Wm.
