Carl Saltwell Has Passed Away
The Record regrets this week to chronicle the passing away of another good man, Mr. Carl Saltwell, father of Mrs. Henry Gath, of this city.
Carl Saltwell was born November 21st, 1834, at Niendorf, Mecklenburg, Germany, and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Henry Gath, in Jewell, at 9:40 o'clock Saturday forenoon, July 26th, 1913, at the age of 78 years, 8 months and 5 days.
In 1868 he emigrated to America, locating first at Milwaukee, Wis., where he was married to Miss Elizabeth Facklam. To this union ten children were born, three of whom, two sons and one daughter have preceded their father in death. The wife also has passed away, eighteen years ago. In 1871 Mr. Saltwell, with his wife and family moved to Maquoketa, in Jackson county, Iowa, and in 1883 moved to Manilla, Crawford county, Iowa, near which place the family resided on a farm until 1901 when they moved to town, living in Manilla where the daughter, Lena, kept house for her father until her marriage four years ago to Mr. Henry Gath of Jewell.
Since that time Mr. Saltwell has lived with his children, a portion of the time being spent in Jewell where he has made a host of acquaintances and friends who have enjoyed and appreciated the friendship of the kind and always lovable old gentleman.
At the age of 14 he was confirmed in the faith of the Lutheran church, in Germany, and in his faith he has always remained true and steadfast until the end. Last Monday, speaking with his daughter, Mrs. Gath he murmured "I am going Home." Whether his words were those of a wandering mind spoken in the belief that he was returning to the old home in Manilla, or whether he referred to his hope for Eternity is not known, but the bereaved relatives and friends have the consolation of the faith that the spirit of the dear old man has gone to its long home of peace and freedom from care and suffering and pain. Since last October he had been gradually weakening, but during all the long weeks of his sickness he was always patient, resigned and uncomplaining, always the same kind, open-hearted and open-handed man, that he had been in health, a man always ready to reach out the hand of help and sympathy, a husband and father, friendly neighbor, a good man. For the past five weeks he has been at the home of his daughter in Jewell, where, despite the best of care and attention that could be given him, he has steadily weakened until death at last came.
Services were conducted at two-thirty o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Henry Gath home, Rev. W. H. Gifford of the Congregational church officiating. The remains were taken Monday to the old home at Manilla where services were held Tuesday afternoon at two-thirty o'clock from the German Lutheran church, and where the body was laid at rest, beside the body of his wife.
Mr. Saltwell is survived by one son, Chas. Saltwell, of Manilla, Iowa, six daughters, Mrs. Henry Meyer of Manilla, Mrs. George Merdinger of Manilla, Mrs. Henry Martin of Omaha, Mrs. Henry Gath of Jewell, Mrs. Wm. Lapel of Thomas, Okla., and Mrs. Henry Hagedorn, of Woolsey, S. Dak., by 32 grandchildren, and by numerous other relatives and friends.
The Record extends its sincere sympathy to relatives and friends in the sad hour of their bereavement.
