MRS. SEWELL MATHRE DIED SATURDAY
Mrs. Sewell Mathre died at her home in Stanhope Saturday. She had been in poor health the past two years, but seriously ill only since Thursday. Death was due to heart trouble and complications.
Hattie Amundson, daughter of Aslak and Anna Amundson, was born Feb. 26, 1871, in Selgord, Norway. At the age of four she came to the United States with her parents, locating near Cresco, Iowa. They lived there six years, moving then to a farm at Park River, N. D.
She was married in 1888 to Sewell Mathre of Lisbon, Ill., and they set housekeeping on a farm near Park River. In 1891 they moved to Iowa to a farm southeast of Stanhope. Retiring in 1927, Mr. and Mrs. Mathre moved into Stanhope, where they have since lived, except for a couple months they spent at the Story City Sunset Home the past summer.
Mrs. Mathre was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Henry and Martin, an infant daughter, Myrtle, one brother and three sisters.
She is survived by her husband, also three sons and five daughters: Rev. Lawrence Mathre of Esthervile, Mrs. Arnold Sealine, Mrs. Earl Favinger and Mrs. Arthur Fardal, all of Stanhope; Alice Mathre of Quincy, Ill.; Albert of Story City; and Thomas and Mrs. Clarence Johnson of Kanawha. There are also 17 grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. G. P. Slette, lives in Park River, N. Dak.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 1, at the home eat 1:30, and at Our Savior's church in Stanhope at 2:00 o'clock, with burial at the St. Paul cemetery. Rev. Odean Monson officiated. Mrs. Lawrence Mathre, a son, spoke for the family. Memorial gifts totaled $63.09. Mrs. Thomas Mathre and Mrs. Gerhard Thompson of Kanawha sang a duet at the home and also at the church, and Grace and Gladys Mathre, twin granddaughters of Estherville, sang a duet at the church. Truman Quam sang "Den store hvide Flok" at the church.
