Hi Dan,
I live in San Rafael! No, I don't have any more information. Two of our John Devlin descendents today have rings made of gold from gold nuggets. I have been unable to learn anything more about this until the messages about the McGregor men appeared.
I've been to the Maritime Museum at Fort Mason , where they have lots of ship's records --I'm just learning about the resources there --and NARA in San Bruno. Some groups went overland by wagon to Oregon, probably the Oregon Trail. I think probably by ship from Portland/Astoria to SF and thence to wherever. But the others who went overland directly to Calif. must be almost impossible to research except via personal stories and diaries.
I thought I would get some old newspapers on microfiche through the inter library program from the Iowa State Library and see if I can find any articles or comments in the newspapers of 1852 in Clayton Co. There must be something, if only an ad.
Maybe we can collaborate on the renting/reading of the microfiche newspapers?
Kathy
