Viola Barry, 78, of Marcus, died Monday, Dec. 14, 1998 at Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Services will be Dec.17, at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Burial will be in the Holy Name Cemetery.
Mrs. Barry, the former Vila Ihms was born May 27, 1920, at Quimby. She was the daughter of John and Lizzie (Rex) Ihms. She grew up in the Quimby area and graduated from Holstein High School in 1938. She did housework, and worked in a restaurant in Quimby, then moved to Cherokee where she worked in a dress shop.
She married John P. Barry, Jr. on Jan. 23, 1945, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cherokee. They moved to the Barry farm northwest of Marcus. Mr. Barry died July 12, 1983. She moved to Marcus in May 1987, and has been a resident of Heartland Care Center since November 1996.
She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Guild, Member of Catholic daughters of America and Past Grand Regent of the group. She was a member of Marcus Senior Citizens and Farm Bureau.
Survivors include: four sons, Gerald and his wife Mary of Owatonna, Minn.; James and his wife Nacy of Cold springs, N.Y.; Douglas and his wife Cindy of Holstein; and Michael and his wife Caryn of Marcus; two sisters, Helen and her husband Ivar Carlson of Aurelia; and Wilma and her husband Dale Stieneke of Quimby; sister-in-law, Margaret Lange of Paullina; and brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Barry and wife Pat, of Valley, Neb.; grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
