Lena “Slim” Conry, 91, of Washta, Iowa passed away Monday, April 6, 1998, at 7:50 a.m. in Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m. at the Washta United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Sunset View Cemetery at Washta. There will be a family prayer service at the church on Wednesday.

Mrs. Conry was born June 15, 1906 in Iola, Wisconsin to Gustave and Caroline (Adler) Thompson. She and her family moved to Estevan, Canada in 1910. She graduated from Estevan Collegiate Institute. On September 11, 1929, she married Ernest C. Conry at Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada. They returned to Iowa to make their home, and she was head cook for the Washta School for 15 years. She had resided in the Hilltop Care Center in Cherokee for several years and prior to this was a longtime Washta resident. She was a member of the Washta United Methodist Church, the Progressive Club, the United Methodist Women, the church Choir, and the Washta Cemetery Association. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, crossword puzzles, and watching her grandchildren in school activities.

Survivors include a son, Ernest Conry and his wife, Dr. Leola Allen, Seymour, Indiana; a former son-in-law, Gary Crouch and his wife, Nancy, Washta; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ivy and her husband, Elmer Wieck, Remsen, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernest on September 8, 1967; a daughter, Maxine Crouch in February 1989; a granddaughter, Stacey Crouch in 1967; a brother; and five sisters. (Source: Former Cherokee County Historical Society scrapbook, hand dated 4-7-98)
