Obituary
John French
John French, Sr., died at his home in Amherst township, Cherokee county, on Feb. 2, 1905. The funeral service was held on Feb 4th at Epworth M. E. church. Words of comfort were spoken by Elder J. Paterson of Cherokee. The service was well attended, and many friends and neighbors followed the remains to the Marcus cemetery, where he was buried beside his beloved wife, there to rest in hope of resurrection to life eternal when the Lord Jesus Christ the life giver comes.John French was born in Lincolnshire, England, on Dec. 18, 1831. He went from there to Ontario, Canada, when about 19 years old. He followed the trade of general building and brick-laying until the year 1867, when he came to Iowa and settled in Jackson County, where he lived on a farm until 1871, when he came to Cherokee county and settled upon the farm on which he spent the remainder of his days. He was one of the first settlers in Amherst township.
Mr. French was married on Jan. 19, 1858 to Jane Ward, who died Aug 24, 1901. From this union were born six children, all of whom live in this county. He leaves to mourn his death his children, George, John, Thomas, James, Mrs. A. Goodburn and Charles, besides fifteen grandchildren and many other friends and neighbors. He was a great sufferer during the last six years but bore all with Christian fortitude, and without a murmur. In faith he was a First day Adventist but was friendly to all who differed from him.
