Last rites for Ray Edward McDaniel, 65, former manager of the Clarence Telephone Co., will be held at the United Methodist church, Clarence at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 4, 1990. Burial will be in the Clarence cemetery. Friends may call at the Chapman Funeral Home from 3 to 8 p.m. Jan. 3. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Victory Post #286, Clarence. Pallbearers will be David Zeigler, Arlo Hasenbank, Jim Bixler, Robert Hunwardsen, Joe Paidar and Terry Wilson. Honorary bearers are Wayne Syring, Brett Baldwin and Ed Troop. Sally Sawyer will be the organist.

Mr. McDaniel died at his home in Clarence Jan. 1.

The son of Floyd and Blanch Birkenholtz, he was born at Monroe Feb. 3, 1924 and graduated from Monroe high school. He worked for the Maytag Company before entering the Navy Dec. 14, 1942. He served as an electrician's mate 1st class in the navy amphibious forces, including service in the European-African-Middle eastern Theatre. He was discharged Nov. 16, 1945. He married Beulah Shaffer Jan. 5, 1945 in Monroe.

He was also a member of the Clarence American Legion and a life member of the Independent Telephone Pioneer Association.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah; a son, Ronald, Iowa City; 3 daughters, Sandra Meyer, Martelle; Linda Morrison, DeWitt and Edwina McLees, Cedar Rapids; his mother, Blanch, Clarence; a sister, Marvel Wilson, Monroe and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Mason.
