Wanda L. Martin, 86, of Independence, IA, died on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at Unity Point – Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, IA.

Wanda was born on April 26, 1938, in rural Sac County, IA, the daughter of Claus and Belle (Jensen) Peters. After graduating from High School, she went on to attend Hurst Telegraph School in Cedar Rapids, where she graduated top of her class. She later moved to Florida to further her career and live with friends.

When she moved back to Iowa she was introduced to Glen Martin through friends. They made a quick connection and were married on May 25, 1963, and made their home in Waterloo, IA. In 1969, they built a home in Independence, IA, and they started Glen’s Plumbing, Heating and AC. They ran the business together until Glen’s untimely death in 1981. Wanda then continued to run the business while raising their two sons and helping raise her sister’s children.

She later owned and operated Glen’s Checkered Flag Lounge from 1981 until 2011. She enjoyed over 30 years of developing relationships with customers and their families.

One of Wanda’s greatest joys was making memories with her two granddaughters Kirstie and Delaney. She always liked to have a good time whether it was spending time with her siblings at the casino or traveling to cheer on her two boys at racetracks near and far.

Those left to cherish her memories include are her sons, Curt (Deb) Martin, and Dwayne (Molly) Martin, both of Independence, IA, two grandchildren, Kirstie (Carter) Schares, and Delaney (Marcus Orr) Martin, a sister, Judy (Jon) Lympus, Cedar Rapids, IA, and a brother, Don (Connie) Peters, Washburn, IA.

Wanda is preceded in death by her parents, Claus and Belle Peters, her husband Glen Martin, three brothers; Melvin, Lyle and Howard Peters, and four sisters; Donna Mae Peters, Velma Arnette, Eunice Crosser, and Sharon O’Neal.

Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Thursday, January 9th, at Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 10th at the funeral home. Burial will be held at Wilson Cemetery in Independence.
