Sue - if your g-grandfather Walker was born in Allamakee county, or anywhere in Iowa, there will not be an official birth record. Most counties in Iowa didn't start keeping birth or death records until mid-1880. You'll find more info. about Iowa vital records dates at the link at the bottom.

If you have any idea of the church the family attended, it's possible that his birth was recorded in the old records of that church. Also, it is possible that he has a 'delayed birth record'. I believe those records are on Ancestry.
