WAVE: Barbara Westervelt and Pvt. Speck Seney are pictured in the camp newspaper of Lawson General Hospital, under the caption “Imagine meeting you here.” They “went together” here, kept up their correspondence, and then met at Lawson where Barbara is stationed in the WAVES and Speck is almost fully recovered from a broken leg suffered in his first parachute jump.

Barbara Jean Westervelt was born July 7, 1920 to Milo Bernard ‘Bernard’ Jr. and Avo M. Fitz Westervelt. She graduated from high school and junior college in Webster City, IA. She also attended the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia. She was employed as a reporter for the Freeman Journal both before her enlistment and after her release from active duty.
She enlisted in the WAVES in 1943, and served as a Link Trainer instructor at Whiting Field, FL, and later as a public relations officer in Washington, D.C. She left the Navy with the rank of Lt (JG).
She married Barton Seney May 7, 1948. They lived in Des Moines and moved to Kansas City in 1950. Barbara died in Kansas City, MO March 4, 2015.
