Among the first contingent of Women's Army corps members to be assigned to the Pocatello, Ida., army airfield to take over jobs left vacant by the transfer of enlisted men to other theaters of operations is Sgt. Mattie L. Wade, 1121 Minnie avenue, Davenport.
Sgt. Wade has been assigned as mess sergeant for the WAC section at the Pocatello field. She enlisted in the WACs in November 1942, and received her basic training at Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga. After completion of this training she attended the army mess sergeant school and was assigned as first cook at Petersen field, Colo. Prior to her enlistment she was employed as power machine operator by the Rock Island Tailoring Co.
The WACs at the field are housed in quarters built specially for them and their barracks are quipped with showers and bath tubs. They operate their own mess hall and a beauty parlor will be opened shortly.
