54 JOIN THE WAVES -- Pictures above and on the left are 17 of the 54 who passed examinations and were sworn into the WAVES late Thursday. They are among the 75 from the Tri-city area who will depart Aug 11 for Hunter college, New York, to start their training.

Miss Barbara Smith of 1311 Grand avenue, Davenport, who was honored at a farewell party Thursday evening by her sister, Miss Virginia Smith, will leave Davenport on Aug. 25 for Hunter college in New York City for her training in the WAVES.
Miss Smith is a graduate of the Davenport high school, attended Augustana college, and was a member of the Tri-City Symphony orchestra. She has been employed as secretary in the office of the International Harvester Co. in East Moline. Her brother, Walter B. Smith, is an aviation student at Susquehanna university in Selinsgrove, Pa.

Barbara Smith, who is a yeoman third class in the WAVES, is enjoying a holiday visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.F. Smith, of 1311 Grand avenue, Davenport.
The Davenporter left for Hunter college Sept. 9 for her basic training, and has been in Stillwater, Okla. She will leave Tuesday for Washington, D.C., where she will be with the Bureau of Ordnance.

OFF TO WASHINGTON -- Six tri-city girls left Davenport yesterday morning for Washington D.C., to start actual duties as WAVES. The group left Davenport last September for Hunter college, New York City where they had three weeks of naval indoctrination. Oct 5, 1943, they were sent to Stillwater, Okla., to begin training prior to becoming third class yeoman. The girls were all given six day leave which they spent with relatives in the tri-cities.
