Madrid Girl Becomes a SPAR
Margaret J. Shaw, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. M.W. Shaw of Madrid, Ia., Wednesday became the first girl to be sworn in as an officer candidate in the SPARS, women's auxiliary of the coast guard, at the Des Moines recruiting office. A graduate of the State University of Iowa, Miss Shaw taught school for five years at Sheldahl, Ia., and has worked since last summer at the Des Moines ordnance plant. Her brother, Robert, is an ensign in the navy. Lieut. (j.g.) F. W. Weber explains orders to Miss Shaw.
