A 27th Air Transport Group Base, France -- Flying from the largest air technical service command station in France is Flight Nurse Velma M. Scholl of Mason City, who won her promotion to 1st Lieutenant in the 27th Air Transport Group, 302nd Wing. Overseas since March of last year, she now wears two battle stars for participation in the group's medical air evacuation activities during the campaigns of Normandy and Germany.
Lt. Scholl flies aboard her squadron's twin engine Skytrains on their cargo-hauling missions to the fighting front. At advanced airstrips, first-aid station ambulances deliver wounded combat men to her care. During the return flight, she draws upon pre-military service nursing experience gained while on duty with the Rockport hospital, Rockport.
