THEY'RE MARINES

These four Des Moines women are now on active duty with the marines at the marine office here. Later, they will be sent to Hunter college in New York City for their regular training. The new members of the marine women's reserves are Ruth Richards (left), 1085 Twenty-sixth st; Joann Rae (right), 4107 Ovid sty., Betty Lou Edgington (top) 2815 Hickman road and Shirley Simpson, 4308 Ovid st.

Marine Recruiting Staff Members Make Victory Garden

The marine corps Victory garden isn't an all-male project. Sergeants Ruth Richard (left) and Betty Lou Edgington, members of the marine women's reserve, who are on duty at the marine office, get busy with hoes making little clods out of big ones.

Des Moines in the Service

Sergt. Ruth Richards of the marine corps, 2801 Logan st, has gone to Alexandria, La., to spend a 15-day furlough with her husband, Lieut. Richard W. Richards of the army air forces.
