Cpl. Sophie Negomir

 

70 Pct. Of Iowa WACs From Fighting Families
A survey of approximately 70 per cent of the total Iowa WAC enlistment reveals its close integration with the war effort through service of members overseas and in this county, and through other members of their families.

Corporal Sophie Negomir is a radio control tower operator at MacDill Field, Tampa, Fla. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nick Negomir of Mason City, her half brother, Dan Chuick, is in the coast guard, another Nick, is in the navy and her half sister, Mary Chuick, is a corporal in the marines. Corporal Negomir was given army specialist training in radio and television at the Midland Radio and Television school at Kansas City, Mo., before receiving her assignment at MacDill field.

Mr. and Mrs. Nick Negomir, 824 Van Buren S.E., have 2 daughters in the service as well as 2 sons and a son-in-law. Their daughters are S.Sgt. Mary Chuick of the women's marine corps and Cpl. Sophie Negomir of the WAC.

Cpl. Negomir enlisted in September, 1942 and received her basic training at Ft. Des Moines, later being sent to Kansas City for a 12-week course at Midland Radio and Television school. At Ft. Oglethorpe, Ga., she received special training as a control tower operator and is now stationed at MacDill Field, Tampa, Fla. In civilian life, Cpl. Negomir was employed as a stenographer by the Marathon Finance corporation in Waterloo.

Sgt. Chuick enlisted in August, 1943, at Minneapolis while employed with the war manpower commission. She received her basic training at Camp LeJeune, N. Car., and is now stationed in Washington, D.C. in the office of the commandant of the marine corps.
