Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mieras received word from their daughter, Helen, that she had passed the “State Board” and is now a registered nurse. Miss Mieras will continue working at the Missouri Baptist hospital at St. Louis, Mo. until late summer, when she will take an examination for a Navy nurse.

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mieras received word that Helen Mieras is working with the Coast Guard in the flood area on the Mississippi River in St. Louis, Mo. She, together with three other nurses and four doctors are inoculating persons and inspecting living quarters.

Miss Helen Mieras and Miss Ada Ruth Wilmore of St. Louis, Mo. arrived here last Wednesday to spend several days with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Mieras. They plan to leave again Friday. Helen has been inducted into the service as a Navy nurse and will leave for duty August 10.

Navy Nurse

ENSIGN HELEN MIERAS

Ensign Helen Mieras, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras of Maurice, entered the service as Navy Nurse August 1, 1943 at the Great Lakes Navy Hospital. She received her nurses training at the Missouri Baptist Hospital, St. Louis, Missouri and graduated in January. Helen was home for 12 hours on Christmas Day. She has volunteered for overseas duty subject to call anytime. Helen is the oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras, and just passed her 21st birthday.

Ensign Helen A. Mieras, Navy Nurse and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras, has been transferred from Great Lakes to Bethesda, Maryland. She has applied for overseas service and expects to be sent out from her new station. Her new address is Ensign H. A. Mieras, N.N.C., U.S.N.R., National Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland.

Ensign Helen Mieras, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras arrived home Sunday evening by bus from the Minneapolis airport, where she flew from Washington, D. C. Sunday morning. She will spend a few days here, leaving Wednesday evening from Le Mars for Chicago, and Washington D.C. Helen is a nurse in the Navy nurses corps and has enlisted in overseas duty.

Navy Nurse In Africa

Navy Nurse Helen Mieras, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras of Maurice, is now in Africa, according to word received by her parents the past week. Helen is a graduate nurse and signed up for overseas service as soon as she finished her Navy training and received her commission as Ensign. She was stationed at Bethesda, Maryland until she left the states. Her oversee address is available at the News office. Helen is one of the very few young women from Sioux County who is in active service overseas.

Helen Mieras, navy nurse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras of Maurice, was recently promoted to Lieutenant, Junior Grade. Helen is serving in Africa at present and in June she will have been overseas a year. She expected to be there two years before getting any leave.

Lt. Junior grade Helen Mieras of the Navy Nurse Corps arrived home Monday via Washington, D.C. from service in the European War, and will spend a 30-day leave in the parental Chas. Mieras home. Her sister, Marcia Mieras of St. Louis, Mo. also arrived home Monday with her fiancé, James C. Greer, Fire-controlman 1st class, of the U.S. Navy at Birmingham, Alabama, who is home on leave after serving 4 1/2 years in the Pacific. The young couple were married Tuesday evening, May 29 at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras, at 8 o’clock.

Junior Grade Helen Mieras of the Navy Nurses Corps, arrived at the Charles Mieras home near Maurice, Monday, via Washington, D.C., from service in the European war, and will spend a 30-day leave in the parental Chas. Lt. (jg) Helen Mieras left Thursday from Sioux City by plane for St. Louis, Mo. to visit relatives for a day enroute to Toledo, Ohio, where she is a guest of a group of Navy Nurses who served together in the African war theater. She will report to Annapolis, Md. at the end of her leave.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mieras have received word from their daughter, Lt. (jg) Helen Mieras of Annapolis, Md., saying that she had fallen and broken her wrist. She will have it in a cast for some time.

Helen Amelea Mieras was born Feb. 19, 1922, at Maurice, Iowa, which was where she was residing prior to enlisting in the Navy on Oct. 10, 1943. She left for overseas duty on June 14, 1944, returned on May 25, 1945, was honorably assigned to inactive status on May 30, 1947, and returned to active duty Sept. 15, 1947. Her application for bonus pay was filed on May 13, 1949, for which she received $437.50.

HELEN AMELIA MIERAS

Obituary: 1922-2002

Helen Amelia Mieras, of Pensacola, died Saturday August 10, 2002, at a local hospital. Helen was the eldest daughter of Charles Fredrick Mieras and Florence Ellen Steele Mieras. She was born February 19, 1922, at Maurice, Iowa and attended the Maurice Public Schools, graduating in 1939. She later graduated from Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1943 and became licensed as a registered nurse. Following graduation, Helen entered the US Navy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant. During WWII she was sent overseas to serve at the base in Oran, Africa. Helen was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. While in naval service she served in Alaska, Pensacola and other parts of the US, later becoming a Navy Nurse Anesthetist by attending the University Hospital School of Anesthesia at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio. Helen then practiced as a registered nurse anesthetist in Pensacola hospitals. From 1983 to 1988, she served as Director of the Baptist Hospital Anesthesia Department. In addition to her degrees as Registered Nurse (RN), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNAL), Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) and Certified Respiratory Therapist, Helen received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Healthcare and Education. Helen retired in 1988. Ms. Mieras was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Marcia Mieras Mahoney; two brothers, Howard Charles Mieras, Sioux City, Iowa and Jason Everett Mieras, San Bernardino, CA. Her survivors include, three sisters; Audrey Lynberg, West Covina, CA, Nellie Derby, Florissant, MO, and Rebecca Sirois, San Diego, CA; sixteen nieces and nephews and a long time good friend, Frieda Markert.
