Girl Enlists, Gives Blood On Birthday
Thursday was a three-way red letter day in the life of Shirley Elson, daughter of Polk County Supervisor Charles Elson and Mrs. Elson of Bondurant, Ia.
It was her twentieth birthday.
She was sworn in as an apprentice seaman in the WAVES at 9:30 a.m.
And at 11 a.m. she was a donor at the Red Cross blood center.
Miss Elson, a stenographer for the F.W. Fitch Co., lives at 676 Nineteenth st. She received her business training at the Capital City Commercial college here.
Now on inactive duty, she expects to be called into active service in the WAVES within a few weeks and to receive her boot training at Hunter college, New York City.
