Dorothy Ruth Durby

Dorothy Ruth Durby was born Nov. 30, 1920 to Palmer Theodore and Nettie Regina Rognehaugh Durby. She graduated from Forest City High School and attended Lutheran Bible College in Minneapolis and also attended the Parks School of Business.

In 1944 Dorothy joined the Women’s Army Corps after reading an ad saying “Join the WAC, and speed them back!” She was anxious to speed her fiancé, Albert Guhl (World War II Army veteran) back home. Albert and Dorothy were married Mar. 24, 1945 at the Fort Des Moines Chapel.

Dorothy took her basic training at Fort Des Moines and was sent to El Paso, TX for specialized training where she learned techniques needed to help rehabilitate injured soldiers. She was then sent to Percy Jones Army Hospital in Battle Creek, MI which was staffed for treating soldiers wounded in World War II.

She died Aug. 22, 2013 in Ames, IA and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell with military honors.
