NURSE IN NAVY
Miss Josephine Deverwaere, 1654 West Lombard street, Davenport, has enlisted in the navy as a nurse and will leave on May 26 to report on to the Mare Island naval hospital near San Francisco.
She was graduated from the Mercy hospital School of Nursing here, served on the nursing staff at the University hospital, Iowa City for three years, did post graduate work at the Children's hospital, Detroit, was supervisor at St. Mary's hospital in St. Louis and worked in the Children's Memorial hospital in Chicago, prior to returning to Davenport a few months ago to resume private duty pending a call into active service.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Deverwaere of Toronto, Ia.

IN WAR ZONE
Ensign Josephine Deverwaere, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Deverwaere, of Toronto, Ia., a member of the navy nursing corps, who reported for active duty in May last year, is now in New Caledonia in the southwest Pacific war zone, according to word received by her parents. Ensign Deverwaere was graduated from Mercy hospital school of nursing here, did post graduate work in Detroit and was supervisor in hospitals in St. Louis and Chicago prior to entering the navy. She was at Mare Island navy hospital before going into the combat zone. A brother, Arthur, is a sergeant in the army.

Josephine Short - Obituary
Services for Josephine S. Short, 75, of 1350 Northlawn Road, Davenport, will be 3 p.m. Monday at Runge Mortuary. The body will be cremated.
Mrs. Short died Friday at Mercy Hospital.
Visitation is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.Monday at the Mortuary.
She retired in 1975 as a registered nurse at Fejervary Health Care Center, Davenport. She had worked at Mercy Hospital and had done private duty nursing.
Josephine Deverwaere married Clyde Short in 1944 in Davenport.
She was a lieutenant in the Navy nurse corps in the South Pacific in World War II.
She was a member of Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Claudette Short Muckenfuss; Wheatland, Iowa and Simone Short Habosy, Charlerloi, Pa.; a son, James, Davenport; five grandchildren; sisters, Della Ahrens, New Liberty, Iowa, and Evelyn Voylkes, Mechanicsville, Iowa; and a brother Clarence 'Art' Deverwaere, Clarence Iowa.
