Three Des Moines women were sworn in to the WAVES Wednesday and now are awaiting their call to active duty. They are Mrs. Margaret M. Kappelman, 1141 Douglas ave., Mildred V. Lippy, 2948 Easton blvd., and Mary Jean Combs, 957 Twenty-first st.

Four Des Moines women recently have been graduated from the naval training school for yeoman at Oklahoma A&M university, Stillwater, Okla., and have reported to active duty as yeoman, third class, at various stations. The new petty officers and their duty assignments are: Mary Jean Combs, 938 Harding road and Anna Corso, 1503 Thirty-second st., both to commandant, sixth naval district, Charleston, S.C.; Mildred T. Barnes, 663 Thirty-eighth st., bureau of ships, Washington D.C,; and Jeannie E. Gabel, 2324 Thirty-ninth st., commandant, ninth naval district, Great Lakes, Ill.

Mary J. Combs Wed in East

Miss Mary Jean Combs, chief yeoman, U.S.N.R., daughter of Mrs. A.B Combs of Des Moines, and Bartoitte Coolidge Yoder, chief machinist mate, U.S.N., son of Mrs. Mabel Yoder of Framingham, Mass., were married July 6 in the navy yard chapel at Charleston, S.C. Attendants were Gene Adams and Thomas DeLoyd.

Mary Jean Combs Yoder was born July 26, 1922 to Aaron Burr and Mary Ann Armstrong Combs. She died Jan. 14, 2003.

Petty Officer Combs served in World War II with the U.S. Navy WAVES in the office of the V-12 unit at Atlanta, GA. She was married to Bartolette Coolidge Yoder.
