Clayton County Men to Service 

Elkader – Twenty four Clayton County men left Friday for army and navy service. Included were: Elkader – James D. Welsch, Edward E. Daniels, navy; Charles R. Dohrer, army. 

Edgewood – Veryl F. Sherman, navy; Willard B. Wessel, William J. Pesak, jr., and Lloyd D. Easton, army. 

McGregor – Walter W. Stewart, navy; Clifford T. Pilkington, Maury J. Engelhardt and Harold E. Thornton, army. 

Colesburg – Richard W. Jones, army. 

Guttenberg – Willis Carrier, navy; Arthur J. Herman and Asa T. Fisher, army. 

Farmersburg – Vernon W. Glawe, navy; Virgil A. Sawvell, army. 

Garnavillo – Andrew Puelz, navy; Arthur W. Moellering, jr., army. 

Monona – Irving H. Schierholz, navy. 

Elkport – William M. Rutledge, navy. 

Strawberry Point – Melvin L. Alderson, navy. 

Osterdock – Lloyd W. Kottke, navy. 

Marquette – Raymond A. Knapp, army. 

Ivan A. Enderes, Littleport; Fred W. Dill, Farmersburg, and Kenneth M. Esch, Strawberry Point, were transferred to other boards for induction. 

Pvt. John Harden Missing in Italy 

Tipton – Pvt. John C. Harden has been reported missing in action in Italy since Jan. 30, according to a war department message received by his father, Henry C. Harden, of west of Tipton. Pvt. Harden entered the army Fe. 12, 1943, and went overseas last September after spending a brief furlough at his home. He served in the North African and Sicilian campaigns and in a letter received by his father under date of Jan. 18 he told of having volunteered to join the Rangers. Two brothers of the missing soldier are in the army, Pvt. Francis L. Harden is in New Guinea and Staff Sgt. Kenneth C. Harden is somewhere in the European theater. Their mother is dead.
