Sara K. Smerud was born Mar. 9, 1914 to Oscar and Clara D. Wild Smerud. She died Mar. 12, 2006 and is buried in Saint Josephs Catholic Cemetery, New Albin, IA.
During World War II, she joined the Red Cross and spent years in Africa and Italy as a supervisor of the rest and rehabilitation programs for the armed forces; she was associated with the USO system, which was established as a morale booster for the military.
