Robert E. Young, 84, of Stanhope, died Thursday, December 25, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center at Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Stanhope Parish, with Pastor Suzie Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Lawn Hill Cemetery, southeast of Stanhope.
Robert Eugene Young, son of Edward and Hazel Riley Young, was born March 30, 1924 on a farm near Stratford. He received his education in the Stanhope Public School, graduating in 1942. On January 9, 1944, he married Ula Mae Wilson at Boone. Six weeks later, he was called to serve in the U.S. Navy. He served 2 years in the South Pacific.
Following his discharge, he returned to farming northeast of Stanhope. From 1957 to 1959, he was employed as a banker at Pocahontas. He returned to Stanhope and was active in farming until 2006.
Robert is survived by his wife, Ula Mae; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Barbara Young of Stanhope; Bruce and Dwyla Young of Peculiar, MO; Rick and Janet Young of Jewell; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He was an active member of the Stanhope Parish; Stratford American Legion Post # 576; Hamilton County Extension Council; Stanhope Telephone board; Stanhope Lions Club; several years as a 4-H leader; and the South Hamilton School board. Robert and Ula Mae enjoyed dancing, especially polkas; wintering in Texas for several years and Wednesday nights in the park.
