Floyd Benjamin Wright, aviation machinist’s mate second class son of Mrs. Pearl Wright, 2519 Silver Street was awarded the Purple Heart at a ceremony performed at the naval air station, Seattle, Washington on January 12. Sgt. Wright was wounded by shrapnel in the face and legs while his plane was engaged in aerial combat during the second battle of the Philippines. He participated in 45 strikes against the Japanese until his ship was sunk and he was sent back to the States for shore duty. He saw action at Saipan, Guam, Tinian, Halmahera and Leyte during the 10 months he was at sea. He volunteered for combat air crewman duty. Mr. Wright previously served a tour of duty with an antisubmarine patrol squadron on the east coast. He enlisted in 1942. He now will be ordered to shore duty at the naval air station at Pasco, Wash.

Floyd Benjamin Wright was born Mar. 31, 1907 to Louis B. and Lydia P. Kelley Wright. He died Jan. 19, 1971 and is buried in Logan Park Cemetery, Sioux City, IA.
Petty Officer Wright served with the U.S. Navy in World War II.
