Oris Lloyd ‘Orrie' Winkler was born Mar. 28, 1926 to Lloyd L. and Hilda Strauss Winkler. He died July 13, 2000 and is buried in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, IA.
During World War II Seaman Winkler served on board the destroyer USS Johnston (DD-557) which was sunk during the battle of Leyte. He was wounded and rescued 72 hours later.
American survivors of the Battle of Samar, Oct. 25, 1944, are rescued by a U.S. Navy ship on Oct. 26, 1944. Some 1200 survivors of the USS Gambier Bay (CVE-73), USS Hoel (DD-533), USS Johnston (DD-557) and USS Samuel B. Roberts (DE-413) were rescued during the days following the action.
