Russell M. Vifquain, Jr. was born Apr. 1, 1918 to Russell M. (Sr.) and Zola Holmes Ocheltree Vifquain. He is memorialized at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii and in Ames Municipal Cemetery, Ames, IA.
Major Vifquain served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps as a squadron navigator of th 499th Bomb Group, Very Heavy, B-20 Super Fortress, Saipan. He was listed as MIA after aborting aircraft over Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and Purple Heart.
