S. Sgt. James D. Thompson, son of Mrs. Eliza Thompson, 1410 Center Street, has been awarded the bronze Star for heroic achievement in action against the Japanese in the Palau Islands. While participating in an advance with his company across hostile terrain, Sgt. Thompson came upon a fallen comrade and finding that immediate evacuation was impossible, remained all night with the wounded man to protect him from enemy patrols and to administer first aid. The next morning he moved under enemy fire to the new position occupied by his company to report the location of his comrade, during which time he was wounded.

S. Sgt. James D. Thompson, whose mother, Mrs. Eliza Thompson, lives on 1410 Center Street, has been awarded the Purple Heart medal for wounds received in action against the Japanese on the island of Anguar. He is a member of the 81st infantry division which recently invaded the southern islands of the Palau group.
