Raymond Lee Sumpter was born in 1919 to Fred and Josephine Cassidy “Josie” Sumpter. He died Feb. 6, 1944 and is memorialized at the Tablets of the Missing in Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial, Cambridgeshire, England.
Lt. Sumpter served with the U.S. Army Air Corps 343rd Fighter Squadron, 55th Fighter Group. He was MIA/KIA and was awarded the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart.
