Laurel C. Stevens

 

 

Laurel C. Stevens was born Aug.22, 1923 to Corwin and Myrtle A. Stevens. He died Apr. 11, 1944 and has a cenotaph in Monroe Cemetery, Monroe, IA.

Flight Officer Stevens served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 464th Bombardment Group, 778th Bombardment Squadron. He was the bombardier on B-24H #42-95064 and was MIA when they were ferrying the plane on a multi-leg journey from the U.S. to South American and across to Africa, with the eventual destination of Italy. The plane never arrived and the crew was declared dead and their names inscribed on the East Coast WWII Memorial Tablets of the Missing, East Coast Memorial, New York City, NY. (Battery Park, NY.)

In 1990 the crash site was found in dense jungle about 200 mi. north of Macapa, Brazil. The crew’s remains were recovered and they are now interred in a group burial at Arlington National Cemetery.
