Hubert Dale Smith was born Dec. 11, 1921 to Charley Clay and Minnie Smith. He died July 17, 1942 and is buried in Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport, IA.
Cpl. Smith served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 36th Bomber Squadron. He was KIA over the Aleutian Islands when the plane on which he was the radio operator was leading a flight of 3 B-17s on an attack on Kiska Harbor. Several enemy aircraft were sighted and they concentrated their attack on the formation leader. In a few moments their right engines burst into flame and they went down out of control.
