Robert Harwood Shannon was born Feb. 12, 1916 to Ralph E. and Fannie H. Shannon. He died May 3, 1943 and is buried in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington, IA.
Capt. Shannon served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 330th Bomb Squadron, 93rd Bomb Group flying Liberator B-24’s. He had flown over 50 missions, flying from bases in Africa and England, and was on his way to the U.S. at the time of the fatal crash in Iceland. He was awarded the Air Medal with Oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart.
