80 Kossuth Men Officially Listed As Casualties In War
FIRST RELEASE OF STATE HISTORICAL DEATH SUMMARIES
Eighty men from Kossuth county lost their lives while in the service of their country in World War II.

Schmeling, Lewis, S/Sgt.
Killed in action in Italy 7-11-44.
Aunt: Mrs. Dorothy Lauck, Rt. 2, Whittemore, Ia. (with whom he lived.)
Parents: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schemeling, Windom, Minn. (formerly of Whittemore.)

Louis Ervin Schmeling was born June 9, 1919 to William and Alvina Sophia Baas Schmeling. He died July 11, 1944 and is buried in Florence American Cemetery, Impruneta, Italy.
Sgt. Schmeling served in World War II with the U.S. Army 133rd Infantry Regiment, 34th Division and was KIA in Italy and awarded the Purple Heart.
