Father, Son Both in War
Col. Howard B. Rew and Capt. Geo. R. Rew Now in Battle Zones
From an Eighth army air force station in England The Journal has received information that Lieut. Col. Howard B. Rew and his son, Capt. George R. Rew, former resident of Sioux City, now are with the United States Forces Overseas. The son is with a P-47 Thunderbolt group, providing fighter protection for the heavy bombers hitting at German war production centers, while the father is with the infantry fighting in Italy.
Capt. Rew, 23, graduated from the United States military academy at West Point, May 25, 1942 and eight days later reported for primary flight training at Helena, Ark. He went from there to Greenville, Miss, for basic training. He completed his flight training at Craig field, Ala., in December, 1942, and on February 2, 1943, was commissioned a lieutenant. On October 5, 1943, he was promoted to a captaincy.
The family lived in Sioux City many years before removing to New Orleans, where Mrs. Rew has continues to make her home since her husband and son went overseas.

In Uniform
Howard B. Rew, Sioux Cityan who left with the Iowa National guardsmen for Camp Claiborne, La., has been promoted to colonel in Italy, where he is stationed. Col. Rew’s family has resided in New Orleans during the time of his overseas service. Mrs. Rew, the former Margaret Distad of Sioux City, is a guest of her sister, Miss Lorna Distad, 2933 Jackson Street, this week. Their son, Maj. George Robert Rew, decorated in England recently and now on leave, is here with his mother. Col. Rew, who served as well in the last war, went to Camp Claiborne in 1941 and left there in November 1942, for overseas duty. He served in Africa prior to his Italian station.
