Mrs. Meta Petersen received a telegram from the war department Monday, July 2, informing her that her son, Pfc. Walter Petersen, had died on Leyte Island May 17, 1945.
Pfc. Petersen was with a Headquarters Company in the Infantry with the first troops that landed on Leyte.
He has two brothers who are also in the Armed Services, Sgt. Pete Petersen who is stationed at Victorville, California and Sgt. Lester Petersen now in Austria.

Final Burial Service For Walter Petersen
Military reburial services were held in the American Legion Hall at Ida Grove Sunday, August 28, 1949 for Pfc. Walter W. Petersen, who lost his life May 17, 1945, on Leyte Island, Philippine Islands. Rites were conducted by the legion and Rev. R. M. Hudson. Burial was in Midway cemetery near Anthon.
Pfc. Walter Petersen, son of Peter J. and Meta Petersen, was born November 27, 1915 near Danbury but spent most of his life at Ida Grove. He entered military service in March, 1941 and went overseas with an infantry regiment in August 1941, serving in New Guinea and on Leyte Island.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Meta Petersen of Ida Grove; two sisters, Mrs. Virgil Baxter, Escondido, Calif., and Mrs. Homer Clark of Fontana, Calif., and two brothers, Pete of Ida Grove and Lester of Fontana, Calif., besides many relatives and friends.

Walter W. Petersen was born Nov. 27, 1915 to Peter Jens and Meta A. Jochims Petersen. He died May 17, 1945 and is buried in Saint Paul Lutheran Cemetery aka Midway Cemetery, Anthon, Iowa.
Pvt. Petersen served in World War II with the U.S. Army Infantry and was KIA.
