Spencer, Iowa – “The people in Italy welcome us. They are glad to see us come and capture their towns from the Germans. They give us wine, nuts, apples and figs,” Everett Peelgren who is with the United States forces in Italy, wrote his sister, Ervine Simonsen of Spencer. “The other day a woman came and gave us wine and hard bread. I tried to persuade her to take money for it. When I insisted, she still said 'No' and began to cry.”
