Don Pates Aboard Troop Ship Sunk by Germans

The infantry outfit to which Don Pates, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pates of this city, is attached was aboard the ill-fated troopship sunk by the Germans in European waters, according to an official announcement Thursday. There were 248 dead and 517 missing among the troops on board bound from England to the French coast.

The government announcement said that all next of kin have been notified of casualties. Don apparently escaped since his parents have received no word from the war department.

IN TRUCK ACCIDENT

According to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Carl Pates of this city, their son, Pfc. Don C. Pates was injured in a truck accident recently near Marseilles, France.

The Webster City soldier is expected to be in a hospital for two months, receiving treatment for his injuries.

His hospital address may be obtained from his parents.

Donald Carl Pates was born Feb. 24, 1924 to Carl Arthur and Claire Criswell Pates.

Pvt. Pates served in World War II with the 262nd Infantry, 92nd Squadron Battalion, Medical Detachment.
