Edward R. O’Brien was born Sept. 9, 1918 to Edward Raymond and Mary Eloise Hagen O’Brien. He died Jan. 3, 1945 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein, IA.
Lt. O’Brien served with the U.S. Army 456th Parachute Battalion and was KIA Aywaille, Belgium. He was an artillery liaison officer attached to an infantry regiment in Belgium and was killed by an incoming mortar shell while preparing his forces for an attack against the enemy holding a Belgian town. He was awarded the silver star and Purple Heart.
