Pvt. Arthur Bernard Nieland

 

Arthur Bernard Nieland was born Aug. 25, 1918 to Bernard and Mary Grote Nieland. He died Sept. 7, 1944 and is memorialized at the Walls of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery, Taguig City, Philippines.

Pvt. Nieland served in World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps 2nd Quartermaster Co., Aviation and was MIA/KIA in Mindanao, Philippine Islands. He became a POW of the Japanese Army and was aboard the Japanese ship “Shinyo Maru” when it was sunk by the USS Paddle, not knowing that American POWs were on board. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
