Lloyd Russel Nelson was born Mar. 16, 1918 Hans Peter and Henrietta ‘Etta’ Cooter Nelson. He died Apr. 18, 1972 and is buried in Washington Township Cemetery, Duncombe, IA.
Petty Officer Nelson served with the VS8 attached to USS Hornet Carrier Aircraft Service Unit #5, U.S. Navy.

His Obituary: 1918-1972
Lloyd Russel Nelson, 54, a native of the Duncombe community and a long time employee of the Iowa Department of Health in Des Moines, died last evening at Iowa Methodist hospital in Des Moines. He had been in ill health for the past several months.
Funeral services will be held at Dunn’s Funeral Home in Des Moines at 11 o’clock Friday morning with the Rev. John Isom of the First Unitarian church officiating.
The body will then be returned to Duncombe where graveside services will be held at the Washington township cemetery at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Marvin Brewer of the Church of Christ officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. Thursday and from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. Friday.
The son of Hans Peter and Henrietta (Cooter) Nelson, Mr. Nelson was born March 16, 1918 on a farm near Duncombe. He spent six years in the Navy following his graduation from Webster City high school in 1939.
Mr. Nelson graduated from Buena Vista college in Storm Lake, later receiving a Master’s degree in public health from the University of Michigan.
He was married to Evelyn Newton of McDonough, N.Y., on April 5, 1953.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda Rae, 15, and Julie Etta, 12, both at home; two brothers, Verne Nelson of Fort Dodge and Harold Nelson of Williams; and five sisters, Mrs. Malcolm (Nora) Baldwin of Burlington, Mrs. Ellis (Gladys) Tipping, Mrs. Leon (Mildred) Doolittle, Mrs. Lester (Blanche) Hayes and Mrs. Wendell (Opal) Weidlein, all of Webster City.
Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
