Roger Emile Mourlam Jr. was the first-born son of Roger Emile Mourlam Sr. and Margaret Jane (Kahl) Mourlam. He was born September 17, 1916, on the family farm near Windom, Minnesota. When he was five the family moved back to the Woolstock area where Roger attended school and graduated from Woolstock high school. In April of 1942 he joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed near San Luis Obispo in California. While there he married Mary Margaret Hall (of Webster City, Iowa) on July 19, 1942. He then served in Alaska before being assigned to the Army’s Special Services Division at an Italian prisoner of war camp near Ogden, Utah. While there he along with another soldier rewrote the Army manual on proper care of prisoners. For his service he was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon for service above and beyond the call of duty. Roger was then transferred to Missoula, Montana. Roger was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant in 1945. After a few months in California, Roger and his family returned to the Webster City, Iowa area where he lived until his death on March 14, 2011. He is buried in the family plot in Graceland Cemetery, Webster City, Iowa. (photo shared by his daughter)
