80 Kossuth Men Officially Listed As Casualties In War
FIRST RELEASE OF STATE HISTORICAL DEATH SUMMARIES
Eighty men from Kossuth county lost their lives while in the service of their country in World War II.

Matzener, John Frederick, Signalman 3-c.
Lost his life when his ship, the USS Monaghan, went down 12-18-44.

John Frederick Matzener was born Aug. 19, 1925 to Harvey H. and Harriet Amelia Jenks Matzener. He died Dec. 18, 1944 and is buried in Highland Home Cemetery, Ledyard, IA
Petty Officer Matzener served in World War II with the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Monaghan (DD-354) and died in the sinking of that ship during Typhoon Cobra.
