Robert D. Manke, 85, of Webster City, Iowa, died October 7, 2012, at his home. Gunderson Funeral Home, of Fort Dodge, is in charge of the arrangements.
A Memorial Service will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church on Friday, October 12, 2012, at 11:00 A.M. with Reverend Craig Blaufuss officiating.
There are no remaining close family members surviving. Mr. Manke was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Jane, in 1997, by his parents; one brother, Charles R., who died in infancy; and by one sister, Mary Louise Minnich.
Robert D. Manke, son of Charles and Ida (Brown) Manke was born on May 1, 1927 at Webster City, Iowa. He attended school in Webster City and was drafted into Army Service in July of 1945, during World War II, later returning and graduating with the High School Class of 1947. Bob played center on the 1944 undefeated football team. In 1947-1948, he attended AIB College, in Des Moines, Iowa. In November, 1948, he started to work for Co. E, 133rd Infantry, Iowa National Guard, in Webster City, as an Administrative Assistant. On March 26, 1950, he married Marilyn Jane Mason, at Toledo, Iowa. In 1961, he and his wife opened the Flower Cart in Webster City and operated it until 1976. In 1976, they opened the Country Garden Store and operated it until 1986.
Mr. Manke retired from the National Guard with 22 years of service as Chief Warrant Officer W2. Bob was a long time member of the Asbury Methodist Church, joining the church on April 2, 1939. He was also previously active in Masonic work, Commandry, Shrine and Eastern Star. Bob was a volunteer at the Gold Star Museum at Camp Dodge, Iowa. Three wonderful women played a big part in his life, his Mother, his wife and special friend, Mildred Elm.
