ON MONTICELLO
Saturday’s Des Moines Register carried a three column cut on page 2 showing soldiers from the troop ship Monticello, carrying Marlene Dietrich on their shoulders from the giant liner, Queen Elizabeth. Douglas Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Long of this city was aboard the Monticello, which arrived in New York harbor Friday, bringing more than 7,000 members of the 2nd (Indianhead) Division’s 23rd and 38th regiments. Most of the men were bound for the Pacific theater of war.

Douglas Long, son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Long, arrived home Saturday night. He made the trip across the Atlantic on the Europa, now the largest ship in the United States navy. He had served a year in the Pacific and more than a year in the Atlantic.

Douglas Richard ‘Doug’ Long was born Aug. 21, 1925 to Percy B. and Eileen K. Ryan Long. He died Apr. 6, 1989.
Douglas served in World War II with the U.S. Navy.
