SILVER STAR FOR LEFFLER

W. C. Lieutenant Given Top Ranking Award for Gallantry.

First Lt. K. Russell Leffler has been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action in the battle for Rome, his wife of this city has been notified.

Lt. Leffler, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Leffler, former Webster City residents now living at Fort Dodge, was accorded one of the topmost honors in the service for his performance in Italy as a member of an amphibious infantry unit.

The lieutenant has been overseas for about 14 months during which he served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy, the latter theater including the battle at the Anzio beachhead, one of the most hotly contested wedges driven into the German defense lines.

Kenneth Russell ‘Russell’ Leffler was born Sept. 30, 1917 to Adam F. and Helen G. Hughes Leffler. He died Aug. 6, 1996 in Omaha, NE.

Capt. Leffler served with the U.S. Army in World War II. He was awarded a Silver Star for gallantry in action in the battle for Rome.
