John Larson, 85, Webster City, died Oct. 27, 1996, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with Rev. Roy Miltner and John Grebner and Chaplin Orville Walters officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery. Graveside military service will be performed by American Legion Post 191. Visitation will be prior to the service. Foster Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
John Archer Larson, son of Elmer and Lela Miller Larson, was born April 6, 1911, on a farm southwest of Kamrar. He attended the rural schools in Kamrar and Woolstock. He joined the Iowa National Guard in Webster City. During World War II, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the 167th Infantry. On Feb. 1, 1942, he married Elvira Williams in Bethany, Mo. Following his discharge, the couple resided in Webster City. He had been employed at the Cooperative Gas Station, the City of Webster City in the street department, Hart-Carter, and Vitterall-Mills. He retired in 1973, and continued to reside in Webster City.
He is survived by his wife, Elvira, Webster City; daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Donald Powell, Goldfield, Delores and Gene Bennett, Webster City, Darlene Griffen, Webster City; sons and daughters-in-law, John C. and Donna Larson, Webster City, Darwin D. and Susan Larson, Hiawatha, Kan.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Elmer (Sonny) Larson, Clear Lake, Charles Larson, Belmond, Dean Larson, Stanhope; sisters, Marcella Claude, Webster City, Laura Duede, Amarillo, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one granddaughter; four sisters; and two brothers.
Mr. Larson, who was known as Catfish Charley, was a member of the American Legion, oddfellows Lodge, and the DAV of Fort Dodge.
