Sheldon, Ia.—Raymond Kooi, Sheldon junior college student and a member of the naval reserve, has received his orders to report for training at St. Ambrose college, Davenport, July 1.

Raymond Kooi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kooi now of Sheldon, formerly from here, is leaving for Davenport June 30 to attend St. Ambrose College. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve last summer, attended Sheldon Junior College this past winter and will now be inducted into the Navy on July 1st.

Midshipman Raymond Kooi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kooi of Sheldon, Iowa, was among 1023 men commissioned as Ensigns, United States Naval Reserve, in ceremonies held today in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, New York.
The group was the twenty-first class to be graduated from this oldest and largest Naval Reserve Officer’s School, and brings the total number of graduates from the New York School to more than 18,700. Principal speaker at the ceremony was Assistant Secretary of Navy Ralph A. Bard. The officer’s oath was administered by Commodore John K. Richards, USN, Commander, U.S. Naval Reserve Officer Training Center.

COMMISSIONED ENSIGN (photo) RAYMOND KOOI Midshipman Raymond Kooi, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kooi of Sheldon, received his commission as Ensign on December 14. He was stationed at Columbia University at New York City. Shortly after his graduation he spent a leave at the home of his parents. He is now stationed at Georgia where he will again attend school. Cpl. Clarence Kooi, also a son of Mr. and Mrs. Kooi, is a gunner on a B17 and was home recently on an 8-day furlough. He has now left the states for overseas duty.

Raymond Kenneth Kooi, was born Dec. 6, 1921, at Hawarden, Iowa, and was residing at Sheldon, Iowa prior to enlisting in the Navy on July 1, 1943 at Davenport, Iowa. He served with V-12 at Davenport, Iowa, Midshipman School at New York, Radar School at St. Simons, Georgia, and the U.S.N.Tr. Station at Newport, R.I. He left for overseas duty on June 8, 1945, returned on June 29, 1946, and was honorably discharged on July 13, 1946. His application for bonus pay was filed on Sept. 19, 1949, for which he received $272.50.
